Henriette Tilanus wins Lichting 2013
On Tuesday, July 16th, Henriette Tilanus won Lichting 2013. 13 Fashion graduates showed their graduation collections to national and international fashion professionals in a spectacular catwalk show. Henriette Tilanus, graduated at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, was chosen thé upcoming Dutch fashion talent. The G-Star RAW Talend Award, consisting of a sum of €20.000,- and a backstage experience at an international G-Star event, was awarded by Remco de Nijs, Brand Manager of G-Star RAW.
Tilanus showed her graduation collection ‘Let the Dust Settle In’, a collection inspired by her style icon Lady Edith Sitwell, a British writer famous for het eccentric appearance. Experimental textiles characterize her collection; a checkered bleached denim, abstract flower embroideries in cheap plastic and precious beads. Her experiments are applied to a modern collection with a fresh image – original and distinctive, but also wearable.

A panel of international fashion professionals chose Tilanus to be the winner. This year the panel consisted of Alexander Fury (fashion editor The Independent), Stefan Siegel (founder & CEO Not Just A Label), Maarten van der Horst (designer) and Robb Young (fashion consultant & journalist).
The panel was praiseful about the new Lichting:
Alexander Fury: “Every collection I saw surprised me. I haven’t seen anything disappointing, and, more important in these days, nothing was boring.”
Maarten van der Horst: “The Netherlands have once more proven that it’s far from being creatively bankrupt.”
Robb Young: “I predict that there are definitely designers that can survive in the international circuit, amongst the strong characters of Lichting.”
Stefan Siegel: “These 13 graduates represent the class of 2013, a group of designers that will shape the industry, if we give them the chance.”
The concept of ‘Lichting’ is simple: the best academy graduates of one year in one central catwalk show. In the audience are the 700 most important people for the next step in their careers: fashion journalists and influential stylists, ready to spot the next big thing; CEO’s and design managers on the look-out for talent; and the all-important players-behind-the-scenes, all eager to see what the nation’s academies have brought forth this year.
Lichting was founded in 2007 to bridge the gap between the academies and students on the one side and the talent-hungry fashion industry on the other. Lichting brings together the very best of each of Holland’s seven fashion academies. As a result, Lichting is one of the most highly principled fashion events in the Netherlands, both in terms of quality and representation.
